mgetty 1.1.9 and Supra FaxModem 28.8

I'm running mgetty 1.1.9 on a Red Hat 5.0 system with Supra FaxModem 28.8's
flashed to 33.6. It's only been running for a week but occasionally,
mgetty holds the uucp lock on the port and won't release. I assume it's
attempting to reprogram the modem, etc so I've enabled the log file output
and will keep an eye on it. What I find even stranger is that
occasionally, after a user has dialed in (either login or PPP), the modem
is in some "hung" state. That is, I can cu -l the port but my commands
aren't echoed back. atz has no effect either. I have to physically power
the modem off to reset. Has anyone had similar experience with Supra's
(Diamond) or any other modem and have you found a clean solution?
Thanks.
