The documentation clearly states that the vgetty part is maintained by
Marc Eberhard, marc@poseidon.thphy.uni-duesseldorf.de.

Marc is on vacation, and most likely nobody else has enough in-depth
know-how.

No idea. I use mgetty on one OSR5 system, and it works nicely.
Which mgetty/vgetty version do you use? Anything unusual in the log file?
