Have you:

 - recompiled mgetty
 - re*installed* mgetty

Are you running the mgetty binary that you just installed? And not
something that might be in /sbin/mgetty while you installed
/usr/local/sbin/mgetty?

If the mgetty version number is recent enough, you can ask mgetty where
the log file will be, with "-V":

$ mgetty -V

mgetty+sendfax by Gert Doering
experimental test release 1.1.14-Apr02

log file written to '/var/log/mgetty.<ttyX>'
config file read from '/usr/local/etc/mgetty+sendfax/mgetty.config'
