It's more or less just to see, that there is a modem and that it is
answering. Sometimes this information is important, if certain
firmware releases have known problems and you want to sort the bug
reports. But usually it's just a test, that there is something at the
other end.

rmd contains _r_aw _m_odem _d_ata. That is a format dependent on the
modem type. Some formats are documented, so they can be converted to
others. Unfortunately nearly all voice modem manufactures invented
their own format to send voice data to their modem. So to send an
audio stream to a modem, you need the voice data in the _correct_ rmd
format for that particular modem. voc on the other hand is a standard
voice format, that can be played back by many audio programs through
your sound card or audio device.
