One other newbie problem

I determined that ttyS4 was NOT com4.  Now, I get mgetty to answer the phone,
but it will not properly negotiate the fax.  The mgetty.ttyS3 log file reports:

04/28 23:38:09 ##### failed A_FAIL dev=ttyS3, pid=3266, caller='none', conn='',
name=''

It gives this same message for every call.  I have made sure that the various
init-chat lines that I have been trying are valid commands by comparing them to
the manual.  I quickly learned about the one to shut off the volume.
