vm (vgetty) and ZyXEL Elite 2864ID

Hi!
Seems that I'm just dumb ...
I can't playback anything using the 1.1.5 vm (FreeBSD 2.1.5) on my
Elite. Here's what happens:
1) I record via the local phone:
vm record -w -H text
2) I play back the message through the phone:
vm play -H text
Symptom: The text is "mungled"! The first second is played ok, then I
hear some weird "scratch" sounds and the last half or so second is ok
again. Playing around with the '-c' options I noticed that the quality
is better, the higher the compression is (with '4' almost half of the
message is played correctly).
If I record sounds using Win95 (I know, I know) and its sound tools
(getting some .wav file) and convert the .wav file using 'wavtopvf
text.wav | wavspeed -s 8000 | wavtormd <some options>' I get the same
behaviour as described above.
Question: What am I doing wrong? Could it be the ZyXEL Elite? Or my
hardware/software combination (486/DX2-66, FreeBSD 2.1.5, mgetty 1.1.5
not ports but self compiled, Elite 2864 ID with Firmware 2.05, ISDN)?
Or alternative: Is there some decent sound recording tool for FreeBSD,
that has the appropriate outputs? I have a soundblaster compatible card
and 'nas' installed (with doesn't work very well either, but that's a
different story).
I'd like to use my computer as an ansering machine, but without recorded
message ... *sigh*
-Walter
