I think this is the most portable way to do it. You might also need a call
to pvfspeed, because not all modems like 8000 samples per second. For the
Linux sound system there is a tool called vplay/vrec or bplay/brec. Using
these tools makes it possible to record with the correct sample speed for
the modem.

As far as I know, it is still the same. But I'm not completely sure. At
least I tried hard to keep them the same.
