Look at the mgetty log file *why* mgetty is exiting (and being restarted
by init). This message from "init" is printed if the number of program
restarts exceeds a certain threshold, which in nearly all cases hints at
a severe setup problem.

(BTW, what do you mean with "unused ports"? If there is no modem, don't
run an mgetty on that port!)
