Linux Respawning too qucikly

I am running Linux 2.0.30 with mgetty 1.0.0. I am running mgetty
for its AUTO PPP capability. The message I am getting is "INIT: Id "sX"
respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes", where X is the device number. 
I am not going to be using the fax or voice services and would like some help 
coming up with a way around this problem. I don't get this message for ports 
that are active.
