This is even worse. Is it an *internal* modem (which would be about the
worst possible thing I could imagine)? Otherwise, there should be no way
how the modem could crash the machine, except maybe sending some wild,
spikey signals to the RS232 port.

As faxing shouldn't depend on the sender, I consider this "it does not
seem to work". Either it works *always* (modulo line noise, and random
failures below 1 per cent or so), or it is broken, there is not much
"grey" here.
