I looked at gerts incoming-directory (over 400 faxes) and the avarage
seems to be something around 30-70 kb for one file.
A really good gif-file is largeer (normaly over 100kB). small files are
smaller, that's true.
I just picked up randomly a large 84kb-file and tried to zip it - 84 -> 77
(let's forget this)
Here some testresults:
g3file giffile
68000 72000
40000 93000
142000 out of memory :) (ppm-file: 998797)
Result:
I would sau for small sizes (30%) a gif-picture would be the best, for
full-size the g3-file would be a good choice.
If you get a small picture, you have to do: g3topnm -> pnmscale ->
pnmtogif. So the out-of-memory error could be awoided (I hope so).
The last point is the time: g3topnm, pnmscale, pnmtogif takes a lot of
time and CPU-Power... one point more to think about...
