error with USR sportster 33.6k fax/data modem?

I bought this USR modem in Aug. 1996, still a new modem. I failed badly 
with mgetty+sendfax. it can not send or receive fax. I did exactly as faq 
said. I played with policy.h (like setting define #US Robotics modem flag 
on and off) and still failed to send fax. one time when I set mgetty in 
my inittab file, after reboot, the whole modem freeze and I could not ppp 
or fax.

I am running redhat linux 3.0.3 (kernel 2.0.0), standalone with this 
modem for ppp connection also (ppp works fine with this modem).

Please help me newbie. I tried out efax(only software with which I can 
receive class 1 fax) , then hylafax, then mgetty+sendfax. I got really 
frustrated!!
