AutoPPP problems

I recently compiled mgetty with the autopp option, and installedthe
program. mgetty answers fine, and I can log in if I use the terminal
window from a windows client (or mac or linux), or use a script such as
expect ogin:, send name, expect assword:, send password, expect $ send
/usr/sbin/pppd. I cannot get a client logged on using the default
windows dialup networking. Here's an excerpt from the log.

I have not compiled my own version of pppd, but am using the installed
version from redhat 5.2. Could this be the cause of the problem? Any
clues to get me on the correct path would be appreciated.
