2nd page received half scrambled

After using mgetty for months I suddenly encounter the following problem
with only one of the connected fax modems.
The second page of a received multipage fax ALWAYS ends after about half
thru the page with a couple of scrambled lines. The following pages are
always received correctly. But after the whole fax has been send the
sending party's fax machine displays an error while sending the fax.
In the logs (without very high debugging, though) there is no clue of
any problems while receiving the fax except for more - sometimes less -
received bytes.
I am aware that I do have severall error messages during the modem
initialisation. But they never seemed to cause any problems.
System is RedHat 5.2, Modem is a Dr. Neuhaus Cybermod 33.6 V.34+
