What is a good external voice/fax modem, available in North America

I read the FAQ and followed the recommendation on the ZyXel 1496E - the
recommendation for my particular application of voice and fax. However
these modems are rather expensive the only retailer in my area (Ottawa,
Canada) can get them for $496CAN - about $300US. Obviously that is way too
much for a modem, and therefore I am looking for some recommendations from
other North America vgetty users on good external voice/fax modems.

I have scanned the last few months of the mailing list - with no luck...
