"data" carrier in the sense of "page data transmission carrier", not
"data mode" in the sense of FAX vs. DATA. But besides this, yes.
There is something fishy here - stepping down to 7200 isn't bad in itself,
but the fact that it times out afterwards looks like the USR firmware is
getting badly confused.

Exactly. And the USR firmware doesn't seem to be up to "quality" fax
reception yet - sending is fine, reception gives weird effects fairly
often.
I will forward the logfile to USR when I'm back from vacation, but that
won't be before next weekend (sorry).
