There has to be someone using an external voice/fax modem in North America???

I have been using a Multitech 5600DXV for about a month. It looks to work OK
as an answering  machine, for receiving and sending  fax and data...   It
costs about 200 USD. Maybe it is the solution - I would like to try it a bit
further before being completely positive.
I take the occasion to thank everyone involved in building and maintaining
mgetty/vgetty for their nice work. Things do not appear to me so gloomy as
Rod's message suggests (although many voice modems are indeed broken).
