... this is just the basic "my modem doesn't like your modem" thing - or
"what kind of call is this? I don't want to decide, so I don't talk to
them at all!".
If you want to use this only for fax or only for data, try setting
"fax-only yes" or "data-only yes" in mgetty.config, and see whether
it works then (remember to switch your modem OFF after changing these,
to make sure the modem has no leftover settings!). If fax and data
works separately, and just not when adaptive answer is turned on,
then we can play a bit with modem-quirks - there are a couple of tricks
that help on a number of braindead modems, but not on others.
