Fax notification & answering machine

Forgive me if these questions are too basic, but I can't seem to find
the soultion.

1. I've set my Zyxel 2864i up so it receives faxes. This works well,
except that I would like to get an email with the received fax attached,
preferably in a format that I can use "display" to display. Some time
ago I did receive notification with the faxes attached, but the data
file seemed broken, because no program could display it. I believe the
format was pbm or something like that. And I don't know what I did, but
somehow the notification stopped at some point in time.

2. Can someone point me to an easy guide or FAQ about setting up vgetty
as an answering machine, I'd just like a simple system that lets me
record a message that will be played when the phone rings, and then
records the user's message to a file on disk. Just like a normal
answering machine. Also the user's message should be limited to 1 or 2
minutes or so.
