DTMF codes instead of "RING" for vgetty ?

The same way you listen for RING.  Try the following:

Make sure your phone is connected to the modem
Go into minicom (or kermit or whatever)
AT&F
AT#CLS=8
Take the phone off hook and notice the "t" that appears.
Hang up the phone and notice the "h"
Call in from another line and you'll get the traditional "RING"

Try telling that to the secretary :)   They will have no problem with "Press
*1 to start recording the conversation" or "Press *2 if you pick up and hear
a fax machine on the other end".  Better still, they don't have to put down
the phone and mess with the computer.  The logging of the time and number
dialed for all outgoing calls could be completely transparrent (ie require
no action at all from the user".
