Sampling rates... modem choices.

What modems support high sampling rates?  I've got a multi-tech 5600zxdv
running the voice stuff at present, but a lot of the stuff sounds really
rough.  Perhaps this is the result of pvfamp'ing the sounds files
because they are too quite...

Anyone got tips & tricks for making sounds files clearer?  I sample at
7200Hz... I would like to sample a lot higher (11K is possible).

Does anyone have problems with their modem staying online?  When mine
receives a fax, it sometimes hangs the phone, and vgetty does not know
about it (it still thinks things are OK, and has sent reset codes to the
modem, sitting there waiting...)
