Actually, 1.1.9 is not "broken" in itself, it just doesn't work with
GNU libc 2.x.
RedHat 5.1 will ship with 1.1.14, and should be released "just one of
these days".

Umm, well, this is technically correct. 1.0.0 *is* the latest official
release, while 1.1.x are "just interim test releases". Usually 1.1.x
versions have some interesting problems, or might have, due to not being
thoroughly enough.
Maybe it's time to do an 1.0.1 patch, fixing the glibc 2 problems.
