I understand that, yes really...

The tricky point is, _how_ do you want to figure this out? If there is any
sign of a modem or a fax (any type of calling tone), no problem. But what to
do in the case of silence on the line? Silence doesn't give us any advice,
who is on the other end. That's the basic problem. Everything vgetty tries,
is just a guess. You surely don't want to send real human callers a data
carrier. That's the sad story. There are numerous ways out of this problem:
Calling tones, hacks with sending DTMF tones or in some countries, having
distinctive ringing. In that case you have multiple telephone numbers for
one physical line. Of course you need a modem then, that can analyse the
different rings. Signalling of the type of a caller is _not_ possible with
analog lines. You have to use some other hints as mentioned above. This is
one of the very well advertised advantages of ISDN. ISDN _can_ signal you
the type of a caller, if it does that correctly is a different story. So to
bring this never ending problem to a short end: When Mr. Bell invented the
telephone, he forgot about fax machines and data modems. That's it.

No.

See my previous mail.

That's impossible... sigh... because I forgot to mention, that most modems
will hangup after an unsuccessful handshake. So you only have one try...

Bye,
Marc
