USR Sportsters have (most of them) VERY BAD class 2.0 implementations.
So, the answer is, most of the time it won't work.

If you want a cheap modem, you get a cheap modem. If you want
reliability, don't get a cheap modem.
But all of this has been discussed *to death* on the list already. Check
the archives.

efax and hylafax both can use the "class 1" modem interface, but that is
just another can of worms. (Timing is difficult, and things get
unreliable if the system load is too high).
