Speech quality of voice modem

Hi,

I am currently setting up an information
system with DTMF input and voice output.
I am using a speech synthesizer and vgetty.
As synthetic speech is not as intelligible
as human speech I would like to use a voice
modem with good voice quality.

I have used a US Robotics modem but I am
not really happy. AFAIK the modem uses
the GSM codec.

Are there modems that employ a less severe
compression algorithm or none at all?
