Dodgy Rockwell-based modem

I have a no-name Rockwell RC288DPI-based modem (seems to be known as
VF-1128V).
ATI2 reports:
229
VF-1128V/R6 (HO) 6.18.9
OK
It seems to me that the firmware is rather dodgy - it hangs up and
refuses to hang up
(if you get my meaning) at the end of a voice call sometimes, needing a
power-cycle to
recover.
I just wondered whether anyone else has experienced these beasties, and
can give me any
advice (if not I'll just have to use it for data or possibly fax).
Cheers,
Nick
