Can mgetty count rings and do something useful with it?

This may not be directly relevant, but there is a program called xringd
which counts rings. Haven't used the copy I downloaded a considerable
time ago, so don't know much about it, but I would think that some way
(or some kludge) could be found which would allow it to interact with
mgetty.
