For testing, I was running it from the console. The problem exists either
way. What it mean "set controlling tty"? I am guessing it has something
to do with device or file locking.

Please excuse my foolishness thinking that vgetty was too slow. I must
have thought it was slow because of the pauses in tailing the file.
Indeed, it issues the AT+FCLASS? command immediately after it detects the
RING.
I am guessing this has something wierd to do with the modem, because it
works okay plugged into another line. The strange thing is, I can type in
all the commands to the modem just as they are logged, but the +FCLASS?
and +VLS=2 command return OK right away.
I put the U1496RN firmware in today at work and tried it out during lunch,
but now it won't detect rings on that TA at all. The other lines rings
still show up, though. I'm begining to think that maybe I should just
order another POTS line and be done with it. Anyhow, I'm going to try out
the 6.20 for the U1496R+ (I have 100nS chips;-) and I'll tell you all how
it works out.
