aaaaaaa, not so sure about that one Gert, my dialin server uses pppd +pap -chap
and it authenticates through pam/shadow via a pap-secrets file.

Some versions of pppd are not shadow aware. I think the version distrib. under
redhat is, but the utmp logging will not work. I don't know why. I am using
ppp-2.3.5-1

Here is what I use in the /etc/ppp/options:
debug
silent
-detach
modem
lock
crtscts
asyncmap 0
mtu 1500
mru 1500

Here is what I use in the /etc/ppp/options.ttyCx files:
auth
-chap <-- don't do chap
+pap <-- do pap
login <-- authorization of pam through the login
proxyarp <-- add a proxy for the new MAC
:208.32.6.205 <-- assign an address to the dialin machine
netmask 255.255.255.0 <-- assign this mask
ms-dns 208.32.6.20 <-- set the DNS for win95/98/nt machines
ms-dns 208.32.6.30
idle 1800 <-- disconnect if idle for more than 30 min

My pap-secrets file uses this format:

username * "" *
