Can mgetty count rings and do something useful with it?

Well, I may be wrong, but I have a feeling that something like the
following could be made to work. (very messy though) :-
Connect the 'ring detect' signal not to the appropriate pin on the
correct serial port (assuming an external modem, of course) but instead
to the corresponding pin on an unused serial port, or a serial port not used
for a modem, so that nothing is examining the state of its 'ring
detect' line.
Have xringd watch that second port.
If it sees an appropriate pattern, have it send a signal to mgetty
telling it to answer the phone.
Possibly change some of the mgetty config files 'on the fly' before
doing so.
All exceedingly ugly. I should be ashamed of myself for suggesting it.
But I think it might be made to work.
