vgetty not answering after cancelled fax

I've spent an hour or so playing around with this modem when it is in the
"non-ring" state after it has received an aborted fax call (or has answered
a voice call as a fax modem).

Everything seems to be working OK. I can dialout, I can can manually answer
a call, I can send AT commands to my hearts content and everything seems to
be OK

But it will just *not* send a "RING" string when the phone is ringing. The
modem is defintely on-hook, and I can answer manually wth ATA.

I suspect that the aborted fax transfer is leaving the modem in a weird
state. Any ideas?
