help on error msg mgetty !

Hello to all,
    Could someone point me in the right direction to 
correct these errors I'm picking up with mgetty
1.1.14-2  I'm trying to set up a dial in and dial out
and I'm not sure if this is a software or hardware
problem but more then likely both.

lnx kernel: registered device ppp0
lnx mgetty[351]: TIOCMBIS failed: Input/output error
lnx mgetty[351]: cannot turn off soft carrier: Input/output error
lnx mgetty[351]: tcgetattr failed: Input/output error
lnx mgetty[351]: cannot get TIO: Input/output error

any help to resolve this would be appreciated.
mgetty did work for the terminal session i.e.
dialed in using hyperterminal.  Also I would like to
post the errors for a ppp login using mgetty from
Win98, but one foot in front of the other here :)
