dialling out with vgetty

Has anyone had any success with getting vgetty to dial out?

I wanted to make a script that calls a number and records what the
other party has to say.

I made a vm script that is activated by a "virtual" ring. When I "kill
-USR1 <mgetty pid>", the script runs, and apparently the phone goes off
hook at the same time. To make `send "DIAL <number>"' do something, I
had to use `echo -e "ATH\r" > /dev/modem' to go back on hook first.
DIAL then works, but `send "RECORD /tmp/r"' causes the phone to go back
on hook immediately; I had the impression that this might be caused by
me talking directly to the modem earlier because RECORD worked in other
circumstances.

Any clues for me?

Is using a virtual ring to start the script a bad idea in the first
place? I didn't see any instructions for any way of starting a vm
script other than with a ring of some kind.
