I have installed Ameritech's (Michigan, USA) distinctive
ring service on my sole POTS line. The idea is to
receive voice on one ring/number combination and
data/fax on the other. I want my conventional answering
machine to handle the voice part, not vgetty. Despite
several attempts at defining ring_type and rings
in the voice.conf file, I have been unsuccesful in
discriminating between calls received with one ring type
vs the other. The modem either always answers or
ignores incoming calls, irrespective of the ring_type.
My Sportster vi 33.4 has some kind of support for
distinctive ringing, but only god knows what setting
S41=1 really does -- nobody at 3com could/would tell me.
While I'm sure this must have been covered in the archives
previously, my searches of them for distinctive ringing
always turn up empty.
