Thanks to the people who replied.
It's working now.
What I didn't realise is that if a vm script starts with the
appropriate line ("#!/usr/local/bin/vm shell"), then you can just run
the script; you don't have to activate it with a virtual ring, and you
don't have to have vgetty in your inittab. Obvious, really.
