modem, login, phone problems

we are running mgetty 1.1.16, cyclades board with the latest driver, and
linux kernel 2.0.29, and using USR Sporster 33.6 modems.
we are having problems where the modems will not answer the the incoming
calls at all, then for no reason they will answer. this is happening
mainly on 1 set of 4 lines.
One other problems is that users are being disconnected for now reason at
all, just out of the blue they get kicked off.

why the differnce in the log entries and does have an effect as to why the
are cut off???
