autoppp with mgetty, how can i get it to print the correct details in who listing/utmp file.

Hi,
Im using the ppp 2.3.7 which comes with redhat6, but I cant get autoppp to
write the correct username to the utmp file.
Is there a fix for this version of ppp... or are there any other special
tecniques to get it to work.
i have tried @ - and * in the mgetty login.conf file.
