Simple (?)vgetty USR problems

A couple of things I cant (or dont know how) to get vgetty to do with my
USR voice faxmodem pro 56k:

1) use vm to record from the handset or play to the itnternal speaker,
or choose them as the device in shell scripts.  It's all silence.

2)Change the silence-timeout time.  I edit the entry in voice.conf, but
to no avail.

3)Trim silences from the end of recorded messages.  Again, same as 2).

Anyone who knows what my problem might be (especially with 1), your help
is greatly appreciated.
