dtmf modem ON-HOOK detection possible???

Hi,

I think that this is the most appropriate audience to ask this question to
so here goes... ;-P

I have a fax machine (about 4-5 years old, y'know one of those thermal
ones b4 plain-paper), anyhoo... it has these 2 great features for those
people who do not have separate voice and fax lines.

1. firstly there is a remote start feature. this means that i can pick up
a call on a touch-tone phone that is connected in parallel with the fax
machine and having discovered that it is a fax coming through i can dial a
code on the touch-tone phone (e.g. 1-2-3) and the fax starts receiving. at
which point i can replace the touch-tone receiver. so this remote start
feature is like saving me from running around to the other side of the
house to press the manual start button on the fax machine.

*** so i was wondering... can a voice-modem (along with vgetty, although i
think is more a modem issue) detect DTMF tones WITHOUT being OFF-HOOK?
which is effectively what the fax machine is doing. i know that voice
modems can detect DTMF tones OFF-HOOK. that is no problem. but what about
ON-HOOK???

if this is not possible... does mgetty/fax have a manual fax receive
command?

2. this same fax machine also had a fax/telephone mode. in this mode it
would answer all calls after a certain number of rings... check if the
call was a fax and if it was not... play a message to the caller like
"someone is going to answer the phone soon"... and the fax machine would
play a loud ring.

*** so can vgetty, having answered a call, determine that is NOT a fax (or
data) and subsequently play a loud ring through the computer speakers...
i.e. tell the people in the house to pick up the damn phone!!!

well thanks in advance for your help,

i'm looking forward to your replies,

Ben
