mgetty does not report the correct utmp entry after ppp upgrade???

Hi,

After upgrading from ppp 2.2 to 2.3.4 mgetty no longer puts the correct user 
name in the utmp file.  Nothing was changed as far as mgetty config stuff goes.  
Some options in the /etc/ppp/options file were changes (to be compatable with 
the newer version).

If I add /usr/sbin/pppd to /etc/shells and set every users shell as pppd the 
utmp stuff is fine.  My problem is some users use shell access and some only 
ppp. 

Any Ideas on how to correct this behavior?
