Data connection after vgetty message

Hello.

I have just acquired a new KTX 56K external Fax/Modem and am having trouble 
configuring it to work properly with vgetty and voice support.

The target machine is Linux 2.0.9 running vgetty 0.7.3 plus mgetty 1.1.9 and 
is configured to respond to voice/fax/data.

With every other modem that I have tried, a data connection is correctly 
created about half way through the vgetty voice message but with 
this new modem the message plays right through and shortly thereafter, the 
modem hangs up with a "No answer" message.

The same modem and configuration connects successfully to systems without a 
voice message.

Can anybody suggest a cause for this behaviour and, better still, a way to fix 
it.

(No, it is not a winmodem)
