voice: Zyxel 1496 E+, problems with welcome-message

hi,
I have a problem with my Zyxel 1496 E+ (ROM Ver. 6.17). I recorded
a wav-file with my welcome-message and converted it through pvf-tools
to ZyXEL 4-bit ADPCM. (It was recorded at 22050 Hz and converted by
sox to 9600 Hz)
The problem is, that vgetty plays the welcome-message, but the caller
can't hear anything. It seams that the 'volume' is set to 0.
Second problem: The messages recorded by the Zyxel are of very low
quality. There is a lot of noise - the quality is worse than of mobil
phones. Is this normal?
