vm speaker volume

Hi!
I'm using a Creatix LC 144 VF and Linux and
vgetty: experimental test release 0.5.3 / 06Aug96.
While playing a message with 'vm play -s' I tried to reduce the volume.
It plays it to loud.
In voice.conf there is a line
speaker_play_volume 100
I supposed it to be the line to set the volume, but it does not work.
Setting it to 100 gives the same volume as setting it to 5.
Here is a diff of the logfiles at level 6:
Tintin:/var/log# diff vm.5 vm.100
59c59
< conf lib: read: 'speaker_play_volume 5'
---
> conf lib: read: 'speaker_play_volume 100'
96c96
< key: 'speaker_play_volume', type=0, flags=3, data=5
---
> key: 'speaker_play_volume', type=0, flags=3, data=100
Am I on the wrong track here?
It seems to issue no command to the modem. Is this feature not implemented?
Any help would be appreciated.
The speaker is yelling at me.
Matthias
