No, you're perfectly right.

Yes, that's it. This feature is missing at the moment, only the parameter is
there, but no implementation.

The usual command is ATLx with x from 0 to some modem dependant maximum. Try
setting this with a terminal program and save the setting in the profile.
You could also add the ATLx command to mgetty's init sequence.

Surprisingly, usually the speakers are so quiet that it is nearly impossible
to hear anything...
