Hi, all!

Just to add another data point - I just got burned by another
Rockwell modem. A Performance 33.6 V.3m Internal modem with
voice, full-duplex speakerphone, etc, etc - but no Class 2/2.0 fax.

I thought I'd take a chance since it was really cheap ($60 CDN). I
wasn't aware at the time that there exists "advanced" modems out there
that have dropped Class 2/2.0 fax support.

To be honest, the box doesn't claim to have Class 2/2.0 fax capability.
Of course, it doesn't 'fess up to having a Rockwell chipset either. :-)

So it's going back. Pity, because I really liked how the full-duplex
speakerphone worked (under Win95) + I liked the price too. Of course,
I probably wouldn't be able to use the speakerphone capability under
Linux - but I liked the fact that the potential was there.

Similar 56k modems with a brand name (Motorola, USR) seem to be selling
for $300-350 CDN minus a hefty rebate -- what's up with that? The modem
prices seem much higher than they were a year ago when I bought my last
modem.

Maybe it's time to organize a "free software" modem built around a
common, cheap DSP and some GPL'd firmware...

Cheers,

 - Jim
