modems on terminal servers?

i have an older Xylogics Annex terminal server that i use for most
of my serial devices, because most of them don't need more than its
56k max port speed, and so far, i haven't had a device that needs
full modem control signals -- they're all dumb pollable devices, or
dial-out-only modems.
i'd like to set up a modem for dialin, though, and i'm wondering if
mgetty (which i'm configuring for the first time) can handle it.
in reading through at least some of the docs, i've seen no mention
of this kind of setup. can it be done? i have a daemon from Xylogics
that can make a remote serial port appear to be local by creating
a local pty and "remoting" the ioctls etc -- should i bother? does
mgetty have any intrinsic support for remote ports?
i think the Annex ports are only 8-wire ports (and i'm not sure as
i write this which wire gets dropped... RTS? CD?), is this a big
problem?
i think i can probably free up a local serial port if i need to... so
if the answer is "it can't be done" i'll be okay. but i'd like to use the
Annex ports when possible, since i do have other devices that _must_ have a
local port...
