mvm question: local operation

hi -- it's not completely clear from the docs, and i don't yet have
a voice modem to try it with, whether i can access saved messages
from a local telephone without invoking commands to the computer.

or, put another way, if i'm at home, and i know there are messages
waiting, do i have to go to my keyboard to cause them to be played,
or can i do it all from the handset of any phone in the house? i guess
this comes down to: can a voice modem be told to go off hook and start
listening for dtmf commands if it doesn't first receive RINGs?

i couldn't find a man page for "vm", and it wasn't clear from the usage
message...
