Hi !
Unreliable ? I use it for about 8 months, and I never had any problem,
except modem hanging ( huh USR Sporster :( ), and I even use this
technique with an answering machine that takes the line after 2 rings !
When my phone rings, I know that it could be for example my
father's modem, and I just take care not to take the call on the first
ring.
My method : putting good delays in the ppp.chatscript. Once
the configuration made, there is no more problem, since I always ring the
same number, from the same location. Just ask the modem to answer before
the answering machine and that's ok.
To conclude : experiment, if you have a little time, everything
can work... reliably !
