mvm question: local operation

Personnaly, I either play the messages by hand with vm to the telephone
line, which will play it to any connected phones (after dialing a 1
or something to not have the dialing tone), or to the internal speaker
(-s), or I dial from another line, or I use the new WWW extension, or
simpler: I cat the audio to /dev/audio (I do not have a sound card,
but Linux/pcspeaker is enough).
