Some phone companies have a "ring-back" number (that badly overloaded
term again) that, when called, calls you back. If you could get that
ring back number, you could dial it to get it to call you back so your
modem could answer the phone so ytou could use DTMF tones to control
message playback. I do not have this problem, as I have multiple
lines into my house. It is a thought though...
